2006 Captain's Report

It’s that time are you ready?

Please start your wind dances now! The first Sunfish race of the season is Saturday May 27th at 10:00AM! Be there or be orthogonal.

The committee boat schedule is posted in this directory. PLEASE, RIGHT NOW look at the list and see if your name is there, RIGHT NOW note which Saturday you are assigned and RIGHT NOW check your calendar. It is your responsibility to make arrangements (preferably not the morning of J ) if you are unable to perform race committee on the day assigned.

Important Dates:

Saturday July 1st – Firecracker Regatta

We score our regular Saturday races as a regatta; trophies will be awarded for both fleets, yea hah!! If you’ve never sailed in a regatta this is a great way to “get your feet wet”.

Saturday August 5 th – Bring a kid to race day

We are again joining the Laser Fleet this year in “Bring a kid to race” day. For those of you who were unable to participate last year, we had a blast! I encourage everyone to participate. Have extra kids or you need a kid? Let Ken or I know, we will get you paired up! We’ll start at the regular time, and go back to the club afterwards for lunch and prizes

August 19th and 20th - Wawasee Sunfish Regatta

Your Regatta Chairman, Steve Gardt is planning one heck of a regatta. This regatta will be a mid-west regional. The Wawasee Yacht Club is becoming known in the Sunfish community as a great place to come for a regatta, join us!

Saturday September 2nd – Big Blowout Regatta

These will be the last races of the season. They will count towards the season points, but we will also score them as a regatta and award trophies to both fleets.

Our fleet continues to grow, I know of three sailors joining our fleet this summer. If you see someone on the water and you don’t know them, sail up, say hi, introduce yourself and most importantly treat them on the race course as you would like to be treated.

I strongly encourage everyone to know and understand the basic rules of racing. The “Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008” can be ordered from US Sailing, or call 1.800.877.2451 ($15.00 for US Sailing members, $29.95 for non-members).

For those of you who have been racing for a few years you should have a solid understanding of the basic rules. For those of you who are new to racing, start learning the basics now, if you don’t understand something, please ask, I’m more than happy to explain! On the following page are the “The Rules in Brief 2005-2008” supplied by US Sailing. This summary is intended as an aid to sailors and not as a substitute for the full rules of racing; however they are great way to get started! Read through them once a day for 28 days and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you learn them. I also encourage everyone to talk through the rules while we are on the course racing. The more we communicate and learn through each other, the stronger and safer our fleet will become!

I will keep everyone posted with what’s happening in our weekly summer e-mails. If you are not on my sunfish e-mail list, but would like to get our weekly updates, drop me a line, and I’ll get you added.

Here’s to a fun summer of sailing!

Sunfish Fleet Captain
