On the back of a napkin 35 years ago today, the Laser was born. The Laser debuted at the New York Boat Show in January 1971, priced at $695. Known throughout the years for its responsiveness, speed and planing ability. It’s also known as the boat that popularized the term "death roll" (for the ease with which it can be capsized to windward in heavy air).
No need to worry about heavy air in Indiana though. My dad once told me don't worry about the past, there is nothing you can do about it. The summer winds of 2005 (or lack there of) are behind us. Let it go. Summer winds of 2006 lay ahead.
As with every year, things change.
NEW THIS YEAR: The Wawasee Laser Slalom: It will be held at 2:00pm Saturday July 15th. The Laser Slalom consists of 4 parallel buoys, 2 racers going head to head, winner moves to the next round.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: BRING A KID TO RACE DAY: Lasers dominated, but since the Sunfish fleet was on their best behavior last year I've invited them to participate again this year. BRING A KID TO RACE DAY will be held on Sat. Aug 5Th.
DISTRICT 18 CHAMPIONSHIP: Our biggest Regatta of the season will be held Saturday and Sunday September 16th and 17th. Once again we'll be expecting 40 or more boats waiting for the gun. Last years starting line was crowded, come early for a good seat.
Mark your calendars for this years fun filled Laser season. Everyone is invited. Bring someone you know to the dance.
2005 Laser District Championships
September 17-18, 2005
The District 18 Laser Championships are in the books. Another highly competitive weekend of Laser Racing. Our neighbor state to the north (Michigan) brought home the 2 top spots:
Top Male: Rick Rothenbuhler
Top Female: Shelly Rothenbuhler
The winds came and the went throughout the day, but the racing at the New Paris Speedway was right on.
Congratulations to Brad Wagnon as the top WYC finisher, and to Mike Wolfer as the top Junior.
Thanks to everyone for all their hard work to make this another successful Wawasee Regatta.
