Low Point Average Scoring System

All fleets will use this system for scoring their seasonal series for their fleet championship. All regattas and monthly series will use the low point scoring system.

Requirements and Restrictions

Excused Absence - A skipper will receive an excused absence for committee boat duty and off-the-lake regattas. To receive credit for an off-the-lake regatta, the skipper must be participating in a class that is raced at WYC.

Boats must sail in (75%) seventy-five percent of the total races in the series to avoid penalties. Excused absences are included.

Eligibility for Awards - The skipper must compete in at least (51%) fifty-one percent of the total number of races in the club series to be eligible for awards; excused absences are not included.

Breakdown Throw-out - A skipper may request that his boat not be scored due to a mechanical breakdown on his boat that would prevent him from competitively finishing the race. The skipper must not finish the race and must notify the race committee or race chairman as soon as practical. Only ONE breakdown throw-out shall be allowed per boat per seasonal series. The boat shall receive its seasonal average place for its score. The race shall count toward the fifty-one percent and the seventy-five percent rules. This provision is in addition to and does not replace RRS 62, Redress.

Scoring
Boats will receive points equal to their finish in each race in which they participate.

For each race in which they do not participate, boats will receive points equal to their average finish for the series.

For each race less than the required number to be sailed without penalty, boats will receive an additional ** points. The required number of races equals 75% of the total number of races in the series.

Low score wins. Ties are broken in favor of the boat with the lowest average placement. When the tie still remains, it shall be broken per RRS Appendix A, para 2.3.
** The E-Scow boat will receive (13) thirteen points.
** The Lightning boat will receive (9) nine points.
** The Sunfish boat will receive (12) twelve points.

Throw-Out System (Escow Fleet Only)
The Escow fleet will use the following throw-out system on an experimental basis this year to encourage skippers to participate in more races. The scoring system will be as stated above with the following exceptions:
1.

For every (8) eight sailed races, a skipper will receive (1) one throw-out; (excused absences do not count as sailed races). The accumulated throw-outs will be applied to the skipper's worst races of the series at end of the season.
2.
The skipper must meet the 75% rule after the throw-outs are applied.
Example: Assume a 25 race series. A skipper sails in 19 races and has four excused absences (two for committee boat duty and two for an off-the-lake regatta). The skipper will receive two throw-outs, the whole part of (19/8)=2. The 75% rule requires 19 races (.75 x 25 = 18.75 rounded up to 19). The skipper throws out his/her worst two races, which gives the skipper 21 races (19 races plus 4 excused absences minus 2 throw-outs). This meets the 75% rule. If this skipper had only raced in 16 races and had 3 excused absences (a total of 19 credited races), the skipper would meet the 75% rule. But, the skipper would not be able to use the 2 throw-outs that he/she accumulated (16/8 = 2) because the skipper would only have 17 credited races, two less than the required 19. NOTE: The posted standings during the season will not include the throw-outs, the throw-outs will be applied at the end of the series.
